The Gate of Liberation at Black Dragon Pool

The Jiewuo Forest (解脱林 - Jiětuō Lín), historically known as the "Forest of Liberation" or "Nirvana Forest," is a significant site within the Black Dragon Pool (Heilongtan) park complex. The gate features traditional Naxi architectural styling blended with Han Chinese influences, marked by the distinctive upturned eaves and heavy dougong bracketing. The name "Jiewuo" refers to the Buddhist concept of liberation from the cycle of reincarnation. During the Qing Dynasty, this area served as a retreat for the Mu Clan, the hereditary Naxi chieftains who ruled Lijiang. The red silk draping and large lanterns indicate recent use for a traditional wedding or festival. Of note is the "Dongba" culture of the local Naxi people. They are the only ethnic group in the world still using a functional hieroglyphic writing system. While the main plaque is in Chinese characters, the architectural motifs—such as the specific bird and floral carvings—often encode Naxi animist beliefs alongside Buddhist themes. The surrounding ancient cypresses are considered sacred, representing longevity and the connection between the earthly and spirit realms.
